The math has flipped

When the grid goes down, your home shouldn't.

Heat waves, fire-season shutoffs, aging lines — outages aren't rare anymore, and SMUD raised rates again in 2026. Right now there's a window where the SMUD rebate takes a major bite out of the cost. It won't stay open forever.

Questions, answered.

How does the up-to-$10,000 rebate work?+
SMUD's My Energy Optimizer Partner+ pays $500/kWh of nameplate battery capacity, less a 20% holdback (about $400/kWh net), up to $10,000 per household — a 2-Powerwall system reaches the cap. You enroll within 90 days of getting Permission to Operate, and SMUD pays within ~30 days of verifying enrollment (by check or debit card). We handle the paperwork. Final amount is determined by SMUD.
Do I need solar panels?+
No — battery-only systems qualify for backup and bill savings. To participate you move onto SMUD's Solar & Storage Rate (SSR). If you already have solar, even better.
Do I need special space or roof work?+
No roof work for a battery-only system. A Powerwall mounts on a garage or exterior wall, indoors or out — it's about the size of a flat-screen TV. We confirm the spot during your free site check.
What does it cost per month?+
Most homeowners carry it for a low monthly payment — far less than their old SMUD bill — once you count the rebate, energy savings, and ~$440/yr per battery in grid income. Your exact monthly depends on system size and credit; we show you every number and confirm against your real bill before anything is signed.
What's the catch?+
A few honest ones: the grid-income program (Tesla VPP) lets SMUD use a little stored power during scheduled peak events — it keeps a 20% reserve and you can opt out. Enrollment is a 3-year commitment (leaving early means repaying a prorated part of the rebate). And the rebate funding is limited and first-come, so timing matters.
